1e. Questions and the answer - Yes

a) To be

Questions Yes - Short answers

Are you happy? Yes, I am.

Is he / she / it happy? Yes, he / she / it is.

Are you happy? Yes, we are.

Are they happy? Yes, they are.

In Yes answers which use the verb to be - we use am / is / are in the short answer.

b) To have

Questions Yes - Short answers

Have you got a cold? Yes, I have.

Has he / she / it / got a cold? Yes, he / she / it has.

Have you got a cold? Yes, we have.

Have they got a cold? Yes, they have.

In Yes answers which use the verb to have - we use have / has in the short answer.

c) All other verbs

Questions Yes - Short answers

Do you live in Paris? Yes, I do.

Does he / she live in Paris? Yes, he / she does.

Do you live in Paris? Yes, we do.

Do they live in Paris? Yes, they do.

Do / does + subject + verb = Question

In Yes questions and answers which use all other verbs - we use do / does.

2e. Questions and the answer - No

a) To be

Questions No - Short answers

Are you sad? No, I'm not.

Is he / she / it sad? No, he / she / it isn't.

Are you sad? No, we aren't.

Are they sad? No, they aren't.

In negative answers with the verb to be - we use I'm not / aren't / isn't in the short answer.

b) To have

Questions No - Short answers

Have you got any money? No, I haven't.

Has he / she / it got any money? No, he / she / it hasn't.

Have you got any money? No, we haven't.

Have they got any money? No, they haven't.

In negative answers with to have - we use haven't / hasn't in the short answer.

c) All other verbs

Questions No - Short answers

Do you like football? No, I don't.

Does he / she / like football? No, he / she doesn't.

Do you like football? No, we don't.

Do they like football? No, they don't.

In negative answers for all other verbs - we use don't / doesn't in the short answer.

3e. Questions and answers to Past Simple tense Yes / No questions

a) Questions with yes answers in the Past Simple

Questions Yes - Short answers

Were you at the office? Yes, I was.

Was he / she / it at home? Yes, he / she / it was.

Did you see John? Yes, I did.

Did + subject + verb = Question

b) Questions with no answers in the Past Simple

Questions No - Short answers

Were you late? No, I wasn't.

Was he / she / it here? No, he / she / it wasn't.

Did you go to Paris? No, I didn't.
