Dorado pietri was an Italian confectioner. His running career began by accident, when he ran 48 kms in four hours to deliver a letter for his employer. Encouraged by his friends, he took up running as a sport and soon participated in the marathon event at the Olympic cames.
At the end of his first Olympic marathon, pietri was in the lead but unfortunately he started to run round the track in the wrong direction. He soon realized his mistake and changed direction, but kept falling and had to be helped to his feet. This meant that he had to be disqualified. For his courage and endurance, he was presented with a special gold cup. In the process, he became the darling of the Olympics!
Many interesting stories are associated whit the Olympics. For example, ray ewry, a crippled man confined to his won three Olympic medals at the 1900 Olympics for the standing jumps events. Standing jumps are no longer on the Olympic schedule.
